We ran a deliberate, budgeted campaign with technical content creators to find out whether influencer marketing works for developer-facing B2B software. The answer was a qualified yes, with the qualifications doing considerable work.
What we ran
We worked with a small number of creators whose audiences overlapped ours, across written, video and newsletter formats, with a fixed fee rather than affiliate commission.
Each creator was asked to use the product genuinely and say what they found, including criticism. We reviewed for factual accuracy only. Scripted endorsements are transparent to technical audiences and damage both parties.
Results varied enormously by format
Newsletters substantially outperformed everything else per unit of spend. The audience is self-selected, the recommendation carries personal weight, and the click intent is high.
Long-form video performed moderately and kept delivering for months afterwards, which raw campaign-window reporting badly understates. Short-form social produced impressions and almost no qualified signups.
- Newsletters: strongest return, highest intent.
- Long-form video: moderate return, long tail worth measuring.
- Short-form social: volume without qualification.
- Audience relevance mattered far more than audience size.
Attribution was the hardest part
Discount codes and tracked links undercount badly. People see a recommendation, remember the name, and search for it directly days later, arriving as organic branded search.
Adding a signup question asking how people heard about us revealed several times the volume our tracked links reported. Without it we would have concluded the campaign failed and stopped it.
What we would change
We would drop short-form entirely and put that budget into more newsletter placements and deeper relationships with fewer creators.
We would also plan for the tail. Judging long-form video on a two-week window nearly caused us to cut the channel that was still delivering signups a quarter later.
Key takeaways
- Newsletters delivered the best return by a wide margin.
- Audience relevance beats audience size decisively.
- Tracked links undercount — ask users how they heard about you.
- Measure long-form content over months, not campaign windows.
